Hometown Histories continues Stories about towns that used to be part of Ocean Township. At one time, the Borough of Interlaken was the home of many well-known artists and illustrators. The Interlaken Artist's Colony was the reason many of the Borough's early residents were there. Elizabeth Hardy, who grew up in that world, remembers many of the people who were part of the Interlaken Artist's Colony.
The Township of Ocean was formed in 1849 when the Township of Shrewsbury was split and the section along the coast was named Ocean. Many of our neighboring towns were once part of Ocean but broke off to form their own towns over time (which is why the Township of Ocean today has no oceanfront). The Borough of Interlaken became an independent municipality in 1922.
